The Valiant

Concert March

By

Leonard Duarte

The Valiant is a concert march written in the style of Sousa. It presents numerous technical and interpretive challenges for the High School Band. The contrast in dynamics, and articulations makes this march a marvelous teaching tool. The March opens with a traditional intro followed by a scherzo-like first strain. The second strain calls for much contrast in dynamics with loud bombastic sounds being echoed in soft legato style. The Trio intones a beautiful legato and pianissimo melody with "alto" range predominance. The "Dog-fight" and ending strain demand maximum strength and agility from the brass and high woodwinds.
