March

By
John Philip
Sousa

To
understand John Philip Sousa's far reaching impact, and his influence on
the musical tastes of people everywhere, one must understand the man,
his era, and his philosophy. Sousa's philosophy argued that much stuffy,
uninteresting music is fed to the public under the guise of culture
music. "I would rather write an inspired march, he once said, than
a manufactured symphony! Sousa felt that people should be given music
they enjoyed hearing. To this endeavor, he turned his considerable
talents as composer and bandleader to the attainment of this
ideal.
A
highly spiritual man, Sousa employs the hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers"
as the primary theme for his "March of the Mitten Men." The
march has been rescored for band by Mr. Leonard Duarte to fit the
instrumentation of the modern band.
