When the
third movement opens, the scene changes dramatically. The apostle John
focuses on a different scene. No longer is he viewing the chaos and
devastation on earth brought on by The Four Horsemen. He now is shown a
great celebration in heaven. The music is festive and jubilant at this
point.
It is
difficult to keep all the events in proper perspective since none of
them seem to occur in chronological order. The scene now turns from one
of jubilation to an awe-inspiring moment...the return of the Lord! But
this time he comes not as a Savior, but a judge. He comes with the fury
and wrath of God almighty. He comes to make war and strike down the
nations.
"I
saw heaven open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is
called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes
are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name
written on him that no one knows but himself. He is dressed in a robe
dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God...Out of His mouth
comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. He will rule
them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the
wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name
written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."
