The Northern
California Band Association commissioned this work for the All-Northern
High School Honor Band 2000. Concerto for Band is a reflection upon the
life of Dr. David Goedecke, friend, musician, music educator and professor
of music at CSU, Stanislaus. Because this concerto was composed to honor
the memory of a long-time friend of countless music educators throughout
California, this work describes the many distinguishing features of his
personality including his sorrows, his joys and love of music. The composition
is constructed using multiple sections and themes that illuminate this
most fascinating man. The technical demands of the concerto are directed
towards virtuoso players in each section of the Band. The scoring requires
one player per part during the many solos to facilitate the balance between
the soloists and accompaniment. This is a work for the serious musician
who desires a musical challenge. It affords all sections of the band an
opportunity to shine.
